When a person uploads their work to this site what are they allowing other users to do with their work?

For example:

Are they allowing other users to alter(edit) the work in any matter they desire? Even if the result is not approved of by the original submitter of the work.

Can other users "cover" their work? Replay a melodic idea on a different (or the same) instrument?

Great question. And a point that we are still working on at this stage in the development since there are many considerations and possibilities, one being covers and derivatives, as you have mentioned.

For the time being, anyone who is uploading to the site is allowing any other member to download and use the track in anyway they see fit (make changes, distort, harmonize with, build upon, sample, etc.), but with the limitation that it is only to be used within the project from which it was downloaded.

This means, for example, that a member is not permitted to simply download a track and use it to start another project, take the track and use it on another site, or share copies with their friends. For these purposes, the member would have to ask permission of the copyright owner(s) directly.

It would be great to have this as an agreement that people click on every time they upload a track. There was a bit of confusion on the other site and I think having this clearly stated at the outset would help to avoid this.

Sounds like a good idea. We'll consider building it in.

In other words, a spin-off would require the consent from the contributor of each track you are hoping to use - unlike some other sites where if you are the project owner and you enable spin-offs, any submitted track appears to be fair game.

In a nutshell - yes.

Whilst you are in open project mode, each contributor still owns 100% of their original work. For the project director (who may not have ownership in your work at this stage of the project) to be able to give permission to others with regard to using your work doesn't make a lot of sense to us. Hence the title, project director - as opposed to project owner ;)

Options for those who do want an easier route to sharing individual tracks whilst a project is open, and for songs which are completed and have joint ownership, are still being considered. There are a lot of issues associated with this topic so as a starting point we want to put in place the most conservative measures.

Project director is cool. Project facilitator would be even better. ;)
