Hey Mark - I can access, read & reply to my private messages here, all from my phone. I'm using the Android Galaxy S5. I also have used an iPhone 5 before this, and was able to access my messages. What phone are you using?
When I get an email stating that I have a PM from the site, I follow the link & sign in - then I click on the menu icon, and it shows me that I have 1 message. I click it, and read it, then respond. Here is a screenshot of what I see after I sign in & click the menu icon.

About the text boxes being messed up - that should be addressed once those sections are redesigned. The whole site is getting a face lift, one section at a time, so hopefully those issues will be resolved.
