To cater the to the nature of this public domain challenge, a new option has been added to the Copyright section in your project settings area.

For this challenge, the original composition (music and lyrics) is in the public domain, while the team will own the master sound recording.

In Project Settings -> Copyright Assignment, you'll want to:

1) Select 'Song' for the 'copyright assignment' from the dropdown menu.
2) Assign a 100% split
3) Select the 'Public Domain' radio button
4) Enter the original year of publication
5) Enter a reference website for more information on the original song (e.g. Wikipedia)

In the credits section, you'll also want to assign credit for the original lyrics and music to a non-member (since they are likely dead already and not currently members of ProCollabs!).

And please don't forget to add credit for your cover art. You'll find options for this in Credit -> Production -> Cover Art/Photography.

The Public Domain option is new, so please do let us know if you experience any problems. Or if you need assistance generally with the copyright and credit assignments.

Folks are doing a derivative work of a public domain song so their new arrangement (if any) should be covered by copyright as well, not just the sound recording.

The music from our song has no connection with the original, only the lyrics will so the music should be retained as a copyright by those who actually produced it. At least that's my bush lawyer thoughts on the matter :)
I don't suppose I have much to worry about, it's about as Christmasy as a JW our song

Not a problemo, in your case the public domain reference will be for the lyrics only (assuming the melody will also be original).

We just wanted to point out the new Public Domain setting for when you guys are fuddling about with the copyright and credits at the last minute :) Previously, you wouldn't be able to close the project unless someone actually owned the song writing copyright, so this feature resolves this for songs based on public domain music and adds more flexibility. Under the copyright settings, there is also a new 'Arrangement' option. And of course we also have the 'Derivative' works options too.

Both teams will need to decide and use the most appropriate settings for their projects.

Agreed, both songs are awesome! Well done and thank you again for making this a great first Christmas on ProCollabs.

We've posted both tracks to "Santa Studios, NP" for judgement and the results will be posted on the 25th along with your well deserved ProCollabs Grammys :)

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :)
